5 Things to Know About Hair Transplantation

Hair loss affects millions of Americans. Approximately 50 million men in the United States experience male pattern baldness, with half of all men showing some hair loss by age 50. Women also experience significant hair loss, with up to two-thirds affected after menopause. Surgical hair restoration has grown steadily: worldwide procedures rose about 16% from 2016 to 2019, and the number of hair restoration patients increased roughly 157% from 2008 to 2019, according to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

1. Candidacy for Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation requires existing hair in donor areas to redistribute to thinning or bald regions. The procedure is unsuitable for those with complete baldness. While no age barrier exists, waiting until hairline stabilization is recommended.

Smoking is a significant concern: patients who smoke are asked to stop at least two weeks before the procedure, as smoking increases complications and impairs healing. Heavy smokers who cannot stop may not be good candidates.

2. Hair Transplant Procedures

Two primary methods exist for hair transplantation:

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

This approach removes a 6-10 inch tissue strip from the back of the scalp, then divides it into individual follicular units for grafting into recipient sites. Called "strip surgery," this method produces more noticeable scarring.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

A minimally invasive technique that extracts individual follicular units directly using a small circular punch, leaving minimal scarring with no linear scar. At Kurtzman Plastic Surgery, we prioritize the FUE methodology for its natural results and faster recovery.

Post-procedure care includes pain management, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and potentially minoxidil or finasteride to stimulate growth.

3. Recovery and Return to Work

FUT patients typically wait two weeks before returning to work, while FUE patients require approximately one week. Notably, transplanted hair typically sheds 2-3 weeks post-surgery. New growth appears within months, with desired results materializing in 9-12 months.

4. Realistic Expectations

Donor hair represents a finite, non-renewable resource. Optimal candidates have abundant donor supply and minimal hair loss. Those with extensive baldness must accept cosmetic improvement rather than complete restoration.

Future hair loss may necessitate additional procedures, making conservative approaches prudent. Your surgeon will discuss realistic outcomes during your consultation.

5. Choosing a Provider

We recommend choosing a Board-Certified plastic surgeon with proper training in hair restoration techniques. Seek recommendations, review before-and-after photos, read testimonials, and research credentials before making your decision.

Schedule a consultation with our team to discuss your hair restoration options and determine if you are a good candidate for hair transplantation.
