What is miraDry?

miraDry is a noninvasive, FDA-cleared treatment that addresses bothersome underarm sweat and odor. Instead of masking the problem the way antiperspirants do, miraDry uses precisely controlled thermal energy to target and eliminate the sweat and odor glands in the underarm. Once those glands are eliminated, they do not grow back, which is why the reduction in sweat tends to be long-lasting. The treatment is performed right in the office with no incisions, no surgery, and no need for general anesthesia. Your underarms are numbed beforehand, then a handheld device delivers energy to the layer of skin where the sweat glands live while keeping the surface of the skin cool and protected. Most people are bothered by underarm sweat that soaks through shirts, stains clothing, or simply makes them self-conscious in everyday situations, and excessive underarm sweating, known medically as axillary hyperhidrosis, can interfere with work, social life, and confidence. miraDry offers a way to reduce that sweat without the daily routine of strong antiperspirants or the repeat injections that some other options require. Dr. Kurtzman will evaluate your concerns and explain whether miraDry or another approach, such as Botox for sweating, fits your goals.

Technique Options

Dr. Kurtzman offers multiple facelift techniques tailored to your unique needs and goals:

miraDry

A noninvasive, FDA-cleared treatment that uses thermal energy to target and eliminate the underarm sweat and odor glands. Performed in the office under local numbing, with results that tend to be long-lasting because the treated glands do not regenerate.

Best for: Patients who want a longer-lasting reduction in underarm sweat and odor without surgery or repeat injections every few months.

Botox for Sweating

Botox is FDA-approved to temporarily reduce excessive underarm sweating. It is delivered through a series of small injections and its effects typically last several months before treatment is repeated. Our practice also offers Botox.

Best for: Patients who prefer a nonpermanent option, want to try treatment before committing to a longer-lasting approach, or are not ready for miraDry.

Ideal Candidates

miraDry can help adults who are frustrated by underarm sweat and the daily effort of trying to manage it. During your consultation, we review your concerns and overall health to determine whether miraDry is a good fit:

  • Adults bothered by excessive underarm sweat that soaks through or stains clothing
  • People frustrated by underarm odor that antiperspirants and deodorants do not adequately control
  • Those who want to reduce their reliance on prescription-strength or clinical antiperspirants
  • Patients looking for a noninvasive option without surgery or general anesthesia
  • People who prefer a longer-lasting solution rather than repeat treatments every few months
  • Anyone interested in a treatment that targets the underarm glands rather than masking sweat
  • Patients in good general health with realistic expectations about results, which can vary from person to person

The Procedure

miraDry is a straightforward in-office treatment that usually takes about an hour. The process is designed to keep you comfortable while the energy is delivered precisely to the underarm:

1. Consultation & Mapping

We review your concerns, confirm miraDry is appropriate for you, and discuss what to expect. On the day of treatment, a temporary template is used to map each underarm so the energy is delivered accurately across the sweat-producing area.

2. Local Numbing

The underarm areas are numbed with local anesthetic before treatment begins. Because the area is numbed, most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure itself.

3. Energy Delivery

A handheld device is placed against the underarm and delivers controlled thermal energy to the layer of skin where the sweat and odor glands sit. The device simultaneously cools and protects the surface of the skin throughout treatment.

4. Targeting the Glands

The energy targets and eliminates the underarm sweat and odor glands. Because these glands do not regenerate once eliminated, the reduction in sweat and odor tends to last.

5. After Treatment

You can typically return to your regular daily activities right away. Most patients resume exercise and more vigorous activity within several days as any swelling or soreness settles.

Recovery & Results

miraDry requires little downtime. After treatment you may notice swelling, soreness, tingling, or numbness in the underarm area, and these sensations typically clear up over a few days to a few weeks. Many patients use ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers during the first day or two for comfort. Most people return to regular activity, including work, immediately, and exercise and more vigorous activity are usually resumed within several days. We will give you specific aftercare guidance based on how you respond to treatment.

Many patients notice a reduction in underarm sweat soon after treatment. Because miraDry eliminates the sweat and odor glands and those glands do not grow back, the results tend to be long-lasting. Some patients are satisfied after a single session, while others choose a second treatment, often spaced a few months apart, for further reduction. Results vary from person to person, and we will discuss realistic expectations for your situation during consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is miraDry FDA-cleared?

Yes. miraDry is a noninvasive treatment that is FDA-cleared to reduce underarm sweat and odor. It works by using thermal energy to target the sweat and odor glands in the underarm rather than simply masking sweat the way antiperspirants do.

How many treatments will I need?

Many patients are satisfied with the results of a single treatment, while some choose a second session, typically spaced a few months apart, for additional reduction. During your consultation we will discuss what is realistic for your goals. Results vary from person to person.

Does miraDry hurt?

Your underarms are numbed with local anesthetic before treatment, so most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure. Afterward, you may have some swelling, soreness, tingling, or numbness that usually clears up within a few days to a few weeks.

How is miraDry different from Botox for sweating?

Botox is FDA-approved to temporarily reduce excessive underarm sweating, and its effects typically last several months before repeat injections are needed. miraDry instead eliminates the underarm sweat and odor glands, so results tend to be longer-lasting because those glands do not regenerate. Our practice offers both, and Dr. Kurtzman can help you decide which approach fits your needs.

Are the results permanent?

Because miraDry eliminates the sweat and odor glands and those glands do not grow back, the reduction in underarm sweat is considered long-lasting. The body does have many sweat glands elsewhere, so eliminating underarm glands does not affect your body's ability to regulate temperature overall.

When can I return to normal activities?

Most patients return to their usual daily activities, including work, right after treatment. Exercise and more vigorous activity are typically resumed within several days as any minor swelling or soreness settles.
