What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a significant body contouring procedure that addresses what diet and exercise simply cannot fix: loose, excess abdominal skin and separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti). Pregnancy, significant weight loss, and aging can stretch the skin beyond its ability to bounce back and separate the vertical abdominal muscles, creating a protruding belly that no amount of crunches can flatten. During a tummy tuck, excess skin and fat are removed, and the underlying rectus abdominis muscles are repaired and tightened through a technique called plication, essentially creating an internal corset that restores core strength and a flat abdominal profile. The result is a dramatically flatter, firmer midsection with a natural-looking waistline. Dr. Kurtzman approaches each tummy tuck with attention to both function and aesthetics, understanding that patients want not just a flat stomach but also restored core strength, improved posture, and reduced back pain that often accompanies diastasis recti. With proper technique, tummy tuck results can last for decades, making it one of the most satisfying procedures for appropriate candidates.
Technique Options
Dr. Kurtzman offers multiple facelift techniques tailored to your unique needs and goals:
Full Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Full procedure addressing the entire abdomen. Removes excess skin above and below the navel, repairs separated muscles, and repositions the belly button. Creates the most dramatic transformation for significant skin laxity.
Best for: Patients with loose skin both above and below the navel, significant diastasis recti, or post-pregnancy/major weight loss changes
Mini Tummy Tuck
Less extensive procedure focusing only on the lower abdomen below the belly button. Shorter incision, no belly button repositioning, and shorter recovery. Limited muscle repair possible.
Best for: Patients with mild excess skin limited to the lower belly, minimal muscle separation, and good skin quality above the navel
Extended Tummy Tuck
Full tummy tuck with incision extending further around the hips to address excess skin on the flanks and lower back. Provides more complete contouring for patients with circumferential skin laxity.
Best for: Patients with significant excess skin extending to the flanks and lower back, often after massive weight loss
Tummy Tuck with Liposuction
Combines abdominoplasty with strategic liposuction to contour the flanks, waist, and areas that skin removal alone cannot address. Creates a more sculpted, defined result.
Best for: Patients who want maximum body contouring and have localized fat deposits in addition to loose skin
Ideal Candidates
Tummy tuck surgery delivers the most satisfying results for patients who meet certain criteria. During your consultation, we will evaluate your abdominal laxity, muscle separation, and goals to determine if you are a good candidate:
- Have loose, excess abdominal skin that does not respond to diet and exercise, often after pregnancy or major weight loss
- Experience diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles) causing a protruding belly, back pain, or core weakness
- Are at a stable weight within 10-15 pounds of your goal, tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure
- Have completed childbearing (pregnancy after tummy tuck can reverse muscle repair and stretch skin again)
- Non-smoker or willing to quit at least 4-6 weeks before and after surgery (smoking severely impairs healing)
- In good overall health without conditions that increase surgical risk (uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders, etc.)
- Have realistic expectations, understanding that tummy tuck creates a flatter abdomen, not perfection
- Committed to maintaining results through healthy diet and regular exercise after recovery
The Procedure
Your tummy tuck is planned based on the amount of excess skin, degree of muscle separation, and your overall goals. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility:
1. Anesthesia & Preparation
Anesthesia is administered for your comfort and safety. Precise markings are made on your abdomen to guide incision placement and check symmetry. You may receive a local anesthetic injection for extended post-operative comfort.
2. Incision Placement
A horizontal incision is made low on the abdomen, typically from hip to hip, placed so it can be hidden by underwear or a bikini bottom. The length depends on how much skin needs to be removed. A second incision is made around the belly button to free it from surrounding skin.
3. Muscle Repair (Plication)
The skin and fat are elevated off the abdominal wall, exposing the rectus abdominis muscles. If these muscles have separated (diastasis recti), they are brought back together and sutured with permanent sutures, creating a tighter, flatter abdominal wall and restoring core strength. This internal repair is key to lasting results.
4. Skin Removal & Contouring
Excess skin and fat are removed. If liposuction is being performed to contour the flanks or enhance the waistline, it is done at this stage. The remaining skin is pulled down smoothly over the newly tightened muscle foundation.
5. Belly Button Reconstruction
The belly button (which remains attached to the abdominal wall) is brought out through a new opening in the repositioned skin. It is carefully shaped and sutured to appear natural, round, slightly recessed, and proportionate.
6. Closure & Drain Placement
The incision is closed in multiple layers to minimize tension and optimize scar healing. Drains may be placed to prevent fluid accumulation (though some surgeons use drainless techniques). A compression garment is applied to reduce swelling and support the repair.
Recovery & Results
Your recovery begins in our recovery suite, where you will rest until anesthesia wears off. Most patients go home the same day with a companion. The first week requires the most care: you will walk in a slightly bent-over position to reduce tension on the incision, gradually straightening over 7-10 days as tissues relax. Pain is well-controlled with medication, and you should walk short distances several times daily to promote circulation. Drains (if used) are typically removed within 1-2 weeks. By week 2, most patients feel significantly better and can return to desk work, though you should continue wearing your compression garment and avoid lifting anything over 10 pounds. Weeks 3-4 bring continued improvement, you can drive, resume light daily activities, and begin to see your new contour emerge as swelling decreases. By week 6, most patients return to exercise (starting with walking and gradually adding core work as cleared by your surgeon). Full recovery, including internal muscle repair healing, takes approximately 3 months.
Your flatter, firmer abdomen is visible as soon as swelling subsides, with continued refinement over 3-6 months. The incision scar, while permanent, fades significantly over 12-18 months and is positioned to be hidden by underwear or swimwear. Most importantly, the muscle repair creates lasting core strength, many patients report reduced back pain and improved posture. Results are long-lasting when you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. Future weight gain or pregnancy can affect results, which is why we recommend completing childbearing before surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have children after a tummy tuck?
Technically yes, but we strongly recommend completing your family before having a tummy tuck. Pregnancy after abdominoplasty will stretch the skin and can re-separate the muscles we carefully repaired, potentially reversing your results. If you do become pregnant after a tummy tuck, the pregnancy itself is not affected, but you may need a revision procedure afterward.
Will a tummy tuck help me lose weight?
Tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure, it is a body contouring procedure for patients already at or near their goal weight. While you will lose the weight of removed skin and fat (typically 2-5 pounds), the purpose is to address loose skin and muscle laxity that cannot be improved through diet and exercise. We recommend reaching a stable weight before surgery for optimal results.
What is diastasis recti and can tummy tuck fix it?
Diastasis recti is a separation of the vertical rectus abdominis ('six-pack') muscles that commonly occurs during pregnancy or with significant weight gain. It causes a protruding belly, weak core, and often back pain. Tummy tuck is the gold standard treatment for diastasis recti, during surgery, the separated muscles are sutured back together (plication), restoring core function and creating a flat abdominal profile. Many patients report their back pain improves significantly after repair.
What is the difference between a full tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck?
A full tummy tuck addresses the entire abdomen, removing skin above and below the navel, repositioning the belly button, and repairing separated muscles. A mini tummy tuck only addresses the lower abdomen below the belly button with a shorter scar and no belly button relocation. Mini tummy tucks are appropriate for patients with minimal excess skin confined to the lower belly and minimal muscle separation. During consultation, we will assess which procedure will achieve your goals.
How long will the scar be and will it be visible?
The incision runs horizontally from hip to hip, positioned low enough to be hidden by underwear or a bikini bottom. Length varies based on how much skin is removed, typically 15-25 inches. While the scar is permanent, it fades significantly over 12-18 months, often becoming a thin, pale line. We use careful closure techniques and may recommend scar treatments to optimize healing.
Can liposuction be combined with tummy tuck?
Yes, combining liposuction with tummy tuck is very common and enhances overall results. Liposuction can contour the flanks ('love handles'), improve the waistline, and address localized fat deposits that skin removal alone cannot. This combination creates a more complete body transformation. We will discuss whether liposuction would benefit your result during consultation.
